THE GLE COUPÉ SECURES MERCEDES AS FRONT RUNNERS IN THE PREMIUM SUV SEGMENT.
The name Mercedes-Benz is synonymous with class, style and performance. Having been marketed since 1901, this label has had over 115 years to refine its automobile offerings and to ensure they are a cut above most other vehicle manufacturers. We at Ohlala have had the privilege of test driving many different Mercedes models over the years and have yet to discover one that lets down the extremely high level of excellence that everyone has to come to expect from the brand. Thanks to the great team at Al Haddad Motors, we were able to add one more Mercedes model to our list, namely the 2019 Mercedes-AMG GLE 43 Coupé.
Upon our initial exterior inspection, we were immediately impressed by the aggressive stance and muscular shape of this SUV. The expressionism of the vehicle is displayed through features such as powerfully modelled wheel arches and broad shoulders. In the GLE 43, Mercedes have managed to combine the modern luxury of a MercedesBenz with both the agility of a coupé and the dominating presence of an SUV. The three-dimensionally modelled sports grille emphasises the front end and 21” light alloy wheels embody both power and vitality. Illuminated aluminium-look running boards assist in easy entry and exiting of the vehicle. The bonnet is highly contoured and perfectly framed by the finely designed LED High Performance headlamps whilst the flawless finish of the rear end is complemented by the AMG spoiler lip and two-pipe exhaust system. We found the overall design of the exterior to be sleek yet imposing and could not wait to see what the interior held.
As expected, the inside of this vehicle speaks only of luxury and sophistication. The generous cabin area is elegantly tailored from the finest of quality materials and we were told that there are eleven upholstery options and six distinctive trim choices to select from.

This will help to ensure your vehicle is an expression of your own personality. The seating is truly comfortable and provides one with 4-way lumbar support. The seats are electronically adjustable and come complete with memory function. The COMAND™ Infotainment system helps the driver to monitor and control the various features of the vehicle navigation, entertainment, driving systems and vehicle settings. Data is displayed in high resolution on the centrally positioned, fine glass, 20.3 cm screen (diagonal) display. The innovative touchpad facilitates intuitive operation using finger gestures, which we found to be most useful and easy to operate.
Slipping into the back, we discovered the four-door coupé design allows for three passengers to sit comfortably in what is the widest rear seat in the GLE’s class. The split seat backs can be folded down to create up to 60.7 cubic feet of carpeted luggage space, the largest of any coupé in the world. The Panoramic sliding sunroof is yet another great feature that adds to the already impressive internal setup of the GLE 43. The entire interior is complimented by the ambient lighting provided throughout the vehicle. As we started the 3 L – V6 Cylinder Engine, we could not help but smile at the sound of this potent machine purring like a lion. The master technicians at Mercedes have developed an engine that offers 390 horsepower at 5500 to 6000 rpm with 520 Nm or torque at 1800 to 4000 rpm. The result is one powerful vehicle capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds and holding a top speed of 250 km/h. Not only does one have plenty of speed on offer with this Mercedes, but an incredibly smooth ride thanks to the automatic transmission, complimented by the sense of control provided by the grip and handling of this sturdy vehicle. The various driving modes on offer ensure maximum performance is available in a variety of environments.
As one would assume, Mercedes-Benz have assured the occupants of the GLE 43 are kept safe at all times on the road with the inclusion of multiple advanced safety features. These include Collision Prevention Assist Plus, Pre-Safe™ Plus, Distronic Plus™ and an available Parking Assist Package complete with its Surround View System.
After our experience, we had to conclude that as far as performance and technology are concerned, the visually stunning Mercedes-AMG GLE 43 Coupé is easily one of the finest motor vehicles we have had the pleasure of driving in quite some time.
