The Serious Business of Beauty

The wellness industry plays a significant role in OHLALA’s world. This month, we interviewed Aysha Al Khalifa, the owner of Lavande Beauty Spa, for an insight into this beauty haven, which is celebrating 10 years.

OHLALA – Your journey weaves together beauty training, business studies and a career in public relations. How did these different chapters shape your outlook before you became an entrepreneur?

Aysha Al Khalifa – My diverse background gave me a unique foundation. I learned how to understand and connect with people through public relations, gained strategic business knowledge and developed a passion for the beauty industry. All of these experiences prepared me with the right skills to launch my own business.

OHLALA – With such a diverse background, what ultimately pushed you to take the leap and establish Lavande Beauty Spa back in 2015?

Aysha – It was the culmination of a lifelong dream. Ever since I first studied beauty in Beirut back in 2005, I’ve had a clear vision of creating a space that offers exceptional beauty and spa services. Lavande was the fulfilment of that passion.

OHLALA – What lessons from your time at the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities do you still apply to your business today?

Aysha – That experience taught me the importance of diligence, teamwork and problem-solving. It’s where I honed my skills in managing different teams and vendors, making informed decisions and navigating difficult situations. These lessons are essential for running a successful business.

OHLALA – Lavande has been operating for a decade now. What do you think has been the key factor to its longevity in such a competitive industry?

Aysha – The key to our success is my constant, hands-on involvement. As an owner, I am also a present manager. I believe that being actively involved in the day-to-day operations and connecting with our clients and staff is crucial for maintaining our standards and staying ahead in this fast-paced industry.

OHLALA – Over the years, the beauty industry has become more innovative and dynamic. How do you decide which treatments or trends are worth introducing?

Aysha – We stay current through continuous research and professional development. We work closely with leading industry institutions and make it a priority to attend advanced training courses. This ensures that any new treatment or trend we introduce is effective and truly benefits our clients.

“The beauty industry in Bahrain is incredibly dynamic and constantly evolving.”
– Aysha Al Khalifa

OHLALA – Every business journey has its challenges. What has been one of the most significant obstacles you’ve faced as an entrepreneur and how did you overcome it?

Aysha – One of the biggest challenges has been building a unified team. It’s a continuous process of nurturing a family-like environment where everyone feels valued and supports each other. It’s a rewarding challenge, as a strong and unified team is the foundation of our success.

OHLALA – What tips can you give to someone who wants to start a business in the beauty field?

Aysha – Starting a business in the beauty field is all about building a solid foundation. I recommend starting slowly and not expanding too quickly, taking the time to study the market and adjust your approach. If you do that, you’ll grow steadily and build a business you’re proud of.

OHLALA – Entrepreneurship can sometimes feel isolating. Who or what has been your biggest source of motivation and grounding throughout this journey?

Aysha – I am incredibly grateful for my support system. My mentors and the people around me have been a constant source of guidance and motivation. Their continuous support is a blessing that keeps me grounded and focussed.

OHLALA – How do you see the beauty scenario in Bahrain?

Aysha – The beauty industry in Bahrain is incredibly dynamic and constantly evolving. It’s always keeping pace with global trends and we are committed to continually improving our services to meet the changing demands and high standards of our clients.
