OHLALA TOOK THE MERCEDES-AMG SL 55 4MATIC+ OUT FOR A DAY, EXPLORING HOW POWER, PRESENCE AND OPEN-TOP DRIVING COME TOGETHER IN PERFECT BALANCE.

Some cars make an entrance. Others take over the moment they arrive. The Mercedes-AMG SL 55 4MATIC+ did both – effortlessly. When it joined us for a day of inspection and driving, it felt less like meeting a new model and more like reacquainting ourselves with a name that has long defined open-top motoring.
This latest iteration carries that legacy forward with purpose, blending modern engineering with the character that has made the SL an enduring icon. From the outset, it promised an experience as engaging as it was refined – and naturally, we were ready to experience it firsthand.
A STATEMENT IN EVERY CURVE
The SL’s proportions are classic, but the execution remains undeniably current. A long bonnet, compact rear and sculpted surfaces give it that unmistakable roadster silhouette – one that looks both powerful and elegant at once.
\Our test car sat on 21-inch AMG multi-spoke alloy wheels, which filled the arches perfectly and added just the right amount of drama. Redpainted brake callipers peeked through with quiet confidence, offering a subtle hint at the performance waiting to be unleashed.
The soft top – finished in black – maintained the car’s clean profile whether raised or lowered, while DIGITAL LIGHT headlamps added a crisp, modern signature. The AMG-specific grille anchored the front with unmistakable authority.
It’s the kind of design that invites double takes. And, occasionally, a third glance when walking away.

A SPACE TO INDULGE
Inside, the SL revealed a cabin that felt both indulgent and intelligently designed. The red pepper and black Nappa leather combination created an atmosphere that was equal parts sporty and luxurious – the automotive equivalent of heels you could actually wear all evening – and still enjoy the walk home.
The AMG Performance steering wheel in Nappa leather sat perfectly in hand, while the electrically adjustable multicontour seats offered support and comfort. Ventilated and sculpted, they ensured we arrived looking as composed as when we left.
AIRSCARF added an extra layer of comfort when driving with the roof down after dark, subtly enhancing the open-air experience.
Ambient lighting added a soft glow after sunset, while aluminium trim provided contrast. The result was a cabin that felt curated rather than crowded – luxurious, but never overwhelming.
“The driving experience struck a refined balance – composed when cruising, yet responsive when called upon.”

A SMARTER WAY TO DRIVE
Technology in the SL was seamlessly integrated into the experience rather than competing for attention. The MBUX system was intuitive and responsive, allowing easy movement between navigation, media and vehicle settings.
Smartphone integration ensured connectivity remained effortless throughout the drive, while wireless charging kept devices powered without clutter. The Burmester surround sound system delivered crisp, immersive audio that elevated every drive – whether cruising or enjoying a more spirited stretch of road.
The overall experience was cohesive and considered, supporting the drive rather than distracting from it at any point.

DESIGNED FOR THE DRIVE
Of course, the SL isn’t just about looking good at a valet stand – although it does that exceptionally well.
Under the bonnet, the AMG 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine delivered 350kW and 700Nm of torque. The result? A 0–100km/h sprint in just 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 295km/h.
On the road, performance felt immediate yet controlled. Acceleration built smoothly yet decisively, making both city driving and open-road stretches equally enjoyable.
The driving experience struck a refined balance – composed when cruising, yet responsive enough to remind us this is unmistakably an AMG.
And then there’s the sound. With selectable engine sound settings, the SL allows you to choose your mood – from refined to unapologetically expressive.
PROTECTION WITH PURPOSE
The SL’s intelligence extended well beyond performance. Equipped with a suite of driver assistance systems, it quietly supported us throughout the drive. Driver assistance and safety systems worked together to enhance confidence, particularly on longer stretches where consistency matters most.
Parking was equally well handled, with camera-assisted visibility making tighter manoeuvres more manageable, even in busier urban environments. It’s this sense of support – present when needed, unobtrusive when not – that added to the SL’s overall ease of use.

THE LAST LOOK
By the end of our time with the Mercedes-AMG SL 55 4MATIC+, one thing was abundantly clear: this is a car that understands its audience.
It delivers performance without sacrificing comfort, luxury without losing its edge and technology that enhances rather than overwhelms. It’s equally at home arriving somewhere important or escaping it entirely – preferably with the roof down and the soundtrack turned up.
The SL doesn’t just make an impression – it leaves you wondering how quickly you can arrange another drive.
