Shooting Star Watch Gets a Floral Update

Jaeger-LeCoultre introduces two new versions of the Rendez-Vous Shooting Star, complete with lacquered blooms and a celestial display.

In 2022, Jaeger-LeCoultre introduced a new watchmaking complication as part of its Rendez-Vous collection: the Shooting Star. Designed to emulate the randomness of meteor showers, it stood out for its poetic inspiration. In 2025, a new interpretation of the piece is introduced, featuring intricately hand-painted peonies on the dial, available in two limited editions of just 10 pieces each.

The Rendez-Vous Shooting Star uses the in-house automatic Calibre 734 movement and comprises 335 components, developed entirely by the brand. The complication allows a shooting star to sweep across the dial at random intervals, triggered by the movement of the wrist. This unpredictability is central to the story because, unlike regular astronomical events, shooting stars are fleeting and unscheduled, making their inclusion in horology a tough challenge.

The updated design places significant emphasis on artistry. The dial is made up of three layers, with the top disc formed from sapphire glass and hand-painted in Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Métiers Rare atelier. The process begins with freehand outlines, followed by foliage painted in reverse on the underside and finally, the flower petals on the top surface. Lacquer has been used in nine shades for pink peonies and 12 for blue peonies. Each dial must be completed in a single uninterrupted session due to the fast-drying nature of the lacquer. The work is carried out in full protective gear to prevent contamination of the materials, as any foreign particles require the process to be restarted from scratch.

Beneath the floral motif sits a rotating disc of mother-of-pearl, airbrushed in various shades of blue to evoke a night sky. A laser-cut silhouette of a shooting star on one side of the disc enables light to pass through, revealing a third metallic layer beneath and creating the illusion of movement. A diamond-set arc on the sapphire glass dial traces the trajectory of the star.

Both versions of the watch come in a 36mm, 18-carat pink gold case with water resistance up to 50 metres and a 70-hour power reserve. The pink peony model is paired with a fully diamond-set bracelet in pink gold with 625 brilliant-cut stones, totalling up to 6.31 carats approximately. The blue peony version is presented on a blue alligator leather strap, with 189 brilliant-cut diamonds set across the case and dial (around 1.47 carats in total).

Peonies were chosen as the floral motif for their symbolic association with femininity, abundance and prosperity. Combined with the celestial complication, the design brings together natural beauty and mechanical sophistication in a highly limited and technically complex format.
