A visit to Talise Spa at Jumeirah Gulf of Bahrain gave Bushra Hakim the chance to relax fully, with wellness therapies and scenic vistas.

There are days when you don’t actually need a holiday, you just need to drive somewhere far enough that you can pretend you’re on one. For me, that place is Jumeirah Gulf of Bahrain. There’s something oddly therapeutic and meditative about the long stretch of road leading to the resort. This time, though, I had an actual agenda: Talise Spa’s newly launched massage and facial, and a day pass that promised pool, beach and freedom from adult responsibilities.
Driving through the resort’s gates, the landscape immediately felt different to the rest of the island. The arrival area, with its bright marble lobby, offers a grand and elegant welcome.
After a quick wander through, I made my way down to the spa, where Krizia at reception greeted me with cool towels and welcome drinks. A few minutes later, I met Ayşe, the Associate Director of Marketing and Communications, who kindly walked me through the treatments and gave me a short tour of the property.

This was when I realised that Jumeirah Gulf of Bahrain is far bigger than it appears from the outside. The façade is intentionally understated as it hides an entire world behind it – one of the largest resort grounds on the island, in fact. There are about seven pools across the property, ranging from private and adults-only options to family-friendly ones. The sustainable resort desalinates the seawater for the canals that wind through its grounds, where one can take complimentary rides on an abra (traditional boat). The beach, however, is one of my favourite highlights. Stretching out with pristine white sand, calm waters and sunbeds lining the shore, it has the kind of atmosphere that instantly encourages you to slow down.
Back at the spa, I was introduced to Yulandari, the Head Therapist, who would be taking care of me. She showed me the women’s facilities: a traditional Turkish Hammam, an indoor gym, an indoor pool, steam and sauna rooms, as well as showers, lockers and a dressing area. Everything is set up to allow you to take your time and unwind before and after your treatments. We then moved to the treatment room where I changed into a plush robe, the unofficial signal that the day had finally begun.
The journey started with a foot bath of warm water filled with frangipani flowers and slices of lemon. The scent was delicate and soothing. A gentle salt scrub softened my feet, preparing my body for the relaxation ahead. Once settled on the massage bed, we moved on to what I had been most curious about: The Grounding Ritual, a massage created specifically to ease anxiety and stress. The spa recently introduced GROUND, a vegan wellness line that focusses on natural blends; for this ritual, the oil combines frankincense and rosemary.

Before starting, Yulandari asked about specific areas of tension and the preferred level of pressure. I’d done a rather ambitious yoga session the day before, so the list of sore areas was quite extensive. The ritual began with a dry massage and a deep inhale of a blend of frankincense, rosemary and mandarin. Instead of the usual top-to-bottom flow, the massage was divided by the left and right sides of the body. Long strokes shifted into kneading and circular motions, moving in a rhythm that felt both structured and deeply soothing. The fragrance of the oil was warm and earthy; within minutes, my mind had switched off.
Lying on my back, I noticed the treatment room’s star-lit ceiling – tiny lights twinkling softly, reminiscent of those often found on an Emirates A380 or in a Rolls-Royce. They shimmered gently to the soft hum of the music, setting the mood for complete surrender. Before moving on to the rest of my body, a scalp massage was performed using a rosemary and clay oil blend. The focus was solely on the scalp, avoiding the heaviness that can sometimes come with full-head oil treatments. After that came the rest of the body, methodically worked through until I felt the tightness easing away.
The next part of my visit was the Biome Facial, developed to strengthen and soothe the skin barrier, ideal for someone like me whose skin reacts to almost anything. This was unlike the typical facials I’ve had over the years. There were no extractions, no harsh tools, just a focus on technique, lymphatic movement and calming of the skin.
Yulandari began by removing my make-up with the Biome Cleansing Oil, then gently massaging the Restorative Cleansing Balm across my face, neck and décolleté. Her pressure was perfect, firm enough to stimulate but soft enough to relax. A lactic-acid Biome Cleansing Gel Mask was applied next to lightly exfoliate without causing irritation.

The facial incorporated a gua sha routine using a Mookaite stone sourced from Australia. Before use, the stone was kept in an ice bath, giving it a soothing coolness as it glided across my skin. The motions were soft and controlled, releasing facial tension and encouraging microcirculation. The same technique was also extended to the scalp.
It was followed by a longer massage using the Biome Overnight Repair Oil, lifting the skin upwards and working through areas that tend to sag or hold stress, especially around the jaw and cheekbones. She also worked my neck thoroughly, tilting it gently towards each shoulder to encourage blood flow.
Warm gloves were used to remove the oil, followed by a misting of Biome Plant Water. The session finished with the Biome Repair Serum and Cream. Warm towels were used to gently wipe away residue from my hands and feet, preventing any sticky feeling afterwards. My skin felt noticeably calmer, hydrated and balanced without the post-facial tingling I usually experience.
At the relaxation area, Yulandari offered me a trail mix and a deep blue tea that is made from blue pea flowers. After all the pampering, I was naturally hungry, so this little break felt very necessary. I let the oils sink in for a few more minutes before heading for a shower. With the whole place to explore, I wasn’t about to skip the facilities. The indoor pool, with all its privacy, was first on my list. Crowd-free, warm and ideal for a slow float.

The afternoon sun outside was too inviting to ignore, so I eventually made my way towards the beach to enjoy the rest of the day. The sea breeze was cool, the sun was about an hour away from setting and it created the ideal backdrop for a quiet read. I ordered a peach iced tea, settled onto a sunbed and let the moment take over. With the water sounds in the background and the light turning golden, I thought – If this isn’t the good life, I don’t know what is.
