OHLALA – You founded the ENTERTAINER in 2001, providing BuyOne-Get-One-Free offers in dining, travel and more. How did this concept pop into your head? Back then, did you ever imagine that it would become such a big idea, inspiring others?
Donna Benton – When I launched the ENTERTAINER in 2001, it really came from a simple idea: I loved going out, discovering new restaurants and experiences, but I also wanted to make it affordable. Dubai was growing fast, and I saw an opportunity to create something that helped people enjoy more while spending less. That’s how the Buy-One-GetOne-Free concept was born. I never imagined it would grow into what it is today. Celebrating 25 years as one of the region’s leading lifestyle and savings brands, with thousands of offers across the GCC, including our brand-new ENTERTAINER Bahrain 2026. The latest edition features over 2,500 Buy-One-Get-One-Free offers across the Kingdom. It’s amazing to see how a simple concept evolved into a must-have app that helps people save, connect and truly live life to the fullest.
OHLALA – You are the perfect example of a visionary entrepreneur. Where has this skill taken you? What are all the concepts that you’ve created or have been involved with?
Donna – Thank you! I’ve always been driven by curiosity and a genuine desire to make everyday life better. The ENTERTAINER was my first major venture but over the years, I’ve been involved in many hospitality, lifestyle and digital innovation projects. I think being a visionary is about identifying opportunities before they become mainstream. For example, transforming the ENTERTAINER from a printed book into an innovative, data-driven app back in 2013. Now, we’ve taken it even further with our AI-powered in-app assistant, H.A.P.I., which gives users instant support and personalised recommendations. I’m constantly inspired by how technology can enhance real-life experiences – it’s about creating joy and value at the same time.
OHLALA – Why did you choose the Middle East to establish your businesses? What is it about this region that makes it a great place to propel new ideas?
Donna – The Middle East has such a dynamic energy; it’s always looking forward. When I arrived in Dubai, I saw a region full of opportunity, where innovation is embraced and people truly value great experiences. The GCC is an incredible market for us because people here love dining out, wellness and travel – and they’re tech-savvy. It’s also a region that supports entrepreneurs – that’s one of the biggest reasons I’ve kept my roots here for 25 years.
OHLALA – You took a break from leading the ENTERTAINER and have been back at the helm of the company since 2023. What made you come back, and what are the differences between being CEO then and now?
Donna – Coming back to lead the ENTERTAINER felt completely natural. This brand is part of me; it’s my commercial baby that grew into something much bigger than I ever expected. After some time away, I realised how much I missed driving innovation, staying connected with our users and staying true to our core. Being CEO today is about blending tech with lifestyle, ensuring the app feels intuitive, stylish and smart.
OHLALA – What aspect of what you do do you like the most? And what makes you the proudest?
Donna – I love hearing how the ENTERTAINER genuinely changes people’s lives. Over the years, we’ve had stories of first dates at ENTERTAINER restaurants, families making memories at any one of our partner attractions and serious savings made by our users that have helped with school fees or house buying. What also fills me with pride is the loyalty of our customers and the trust of our partners, incredible brands who’ve been part of our journey. Seeing our members dine, relax and explore more while saving is what keeps me motivated.
OHLALA – If you had to attribute your success to one thing, what would it be?
Donna – Resilience and following my instincts. I’ve learned that in business, especially as an entrepreneur, things don’t always go according to plan. But staying adaptable, positive and focussed has been key. I’ve also been fortunate to have great mentors and a strong team who share my vision. Surrounding yourself with people who believe in what you’re building makes all the difference.
OHLALA – Can you give one golden tip for those looking into starting a business? What would be something to follow, no matter which field?
Donna – Solve a real problem and make sure you’re passionate about it. Passion is what fuels persistence, especially when challenges arise. Also, never underestimate the power of understanding your customer. When I created the ENTERTAINER, I wasn’t building a discount product; I was creating a lifestyle solution. Whether you’re launching a café, a tech startup or a service business, your focus should always be on how you make life better for your audience. And one practical tip: start now. Perfection can wait. Progress can’t.
OHLALA – What can we expect from Donna Benton’s next steps?
Donna – Right now, I’m focussed on taking the ENTERTAINER to the next level, making it more personalised, more intuitive and even more rewarding. I’m also passionate about mentoring the next generation of entrepreneurs, especially women in business. I’ve learned so much along the way and if I can help others find their voice and build their dream, that’s success to me.
