From sound healing to meridian massage, Bushra Hakim experienced the Sonic Serenity package at The Ritz-Carlton Spa.

Few hotel names are as synonymous with timeless luxury as The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain. There’s a certain expectation that comes with walking through its doors: opulence without excess, service that’s intuitive rather than intrusive and experiences that feel thoughtfully curated rather than formulaic. It’s this same philosophy that extends seamlessly into The Ritz-Carlton Spa. The spa has its own dedicated entrance, opening into a light-filled reception that feels instantly calming. Marbled floors gleam under soft lighting, while plush fuchsia sofas add a subtle pop of colour against the otherwise neutral and elegant palette.
I was welcomed by the attentive team and introduced to the spa’s new Director, Siti, who took the time to walk me through the extensive offerings before explaining the treatment I would be experiencing that day: Sonic Serenity, an immersive ritual inspired by Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). The treatment is designed to restore balance – physically, emotionally and energetically. It combines sound healing with a 90-minute full-body meridian massage using soft, non-setting pink clay, followed by an hour-long facial. All products used are from Ashmira Botanica, a vegan luxury skincare brand rooted in the principles of Chinese medicine and focussed on restoring harmony from the inside out.
To get started, Houda at reception gave me a warm towel infused with eucalyptus and peppermint oils, perfect for the chilly weather outside. This was followed by a cup of puerh tea, a fermented Chinese tea traditionally known to support digestion and detoxification. Houda explained that TCM views wellness as fluid and ever-changing rather than one-size-fits-all and introduced me to the five elements central to Traditional Chinese Medicine: wood, fire, Earth, metal and water. Each element is associated with different organs, emotions and physical tendencies. Based on my birth chart, my dominant element is water, and this would influence everything from the oils used to the final facial mask, ensuring the treatment was fully tailored.

My therapist for the day, Jero, greeted me before giving me a tour of the women’s facilities. She recommended using the spa amenities before the treatment rather than after, to allow the body to fully absorb the benefits. Once inside, I was struck by just how expansive and luxe the space was.
The locker rooms were impeccably stocked with every amenity one could need and after slipping into my robe, I made my way through the facilities. The steam room and sauna were first, as they are ideal for opening up the pores and preparing the skin. I also tried the thalassotherapy pool, which uses mineral-rich seawater to support circulation, muscle relaxation and skin health. By the time Jero came to escort me to the treatment room, I already felt mentally lighter and physically relaxed.
The treatment took place in the VIP Suite, a secluded space entirely clad in wood. It felt less like a spa room and more like a private tropical cabin, instantly cocooning me in calm. I lay face down as the therapy began, starting with sound healing to ease both mental and emotional tension. Jero used a Kenari chime (an instrument made from tree-pod seeds) to produce gentle, water-like sounds that felt grounding.

My hands and feet were cleansed with warm towels before acupressure points were stimulated to encourage energy flow. Ashmira Botanica’s Brighten and Remineralise Pink Yin Clay was then applied across my back and legs. With sensitive, dry skin, I initially worried the clay might be drying, but it behaved more like a nourishing cream than a traditional mask. Formulated with French pink clay and essential oils, it felt deeply comforting rather than tightening.
To keep the body warm, the clay was covered with a cloth before warm singing bowls were placed along my back. As Jero played them, the vibrations travelled through my body in the most soothing way. She moved the bowls methodically, the sound waves creating a deeply immersive experience that quietened my mind almost instantly.
The massage that followed focussed on relaxation rather than intensity, something TCM strongly advocates. Using more of the pink clay, Jero worked through my tension points with slow, intentional strokes. When I turned onto my back, special attention was given to the stomach area, an often-neglected zone in Western massage but one that plays a central role in Chinese medicine. The sensation was unexpectedly comforting, as though the treatment was working from the inside out.
Once the lights gently came back on, the facial portion began. Jero started with acupressure across my face and décolletage, then cleansed with the Clean and Revive Rose Cleansing Oil and a double cleanse with the Clean and Refresh Creamy Clay Cleanser. A gentle exfoliation came next using the Rice Face Polish mixed with Aloe Glow.

What followed were two distinct facial massages. The first used Rice Balm blended with Yin and Yang serums to address balance and hydration, while the second focussed on meridian pathways using the Yang Face Massage Oil to energise the skin. Lymphatic drainage was then performed using silicone facial cups and aloe vera gel, helping reduce puffiness and encourage detoxification.
The facial concluded with a trio of masks. A cooling Yin mask and a warm Yang mask worked in contrast before the final, element-specific treatment. For my water element, a mask made from Terre de Sarval clay was applied. It is a mineral-rich black clay high in iron, known for absorbing impurities and supporting cellular regeneration along with infusions of essential oils such as juniper, peppermint and May Chang, traditionally used to support clarity and emotional grounding.
The Soothe and Rebalance Organic Bulgarian Rose Spray was misted throughout the facial to tone and hydrate, while the Restore and Illuminate Rice Renewal Cream sealed everything in, leaving my skin luminous and protected. A cold rose quartz roller soothed the skin, but it was the final sound of a quartz singing bowl paired with a delicate windchime that truly completed the experience.

I emerged feeling profoundly aligned, as though both body and mind had been gently recalibrated. In the relaxation lounge, Jero brought me Bai Mudan tea, made from white peony flowers. Light and floral, it was chosen specifically to support the water element by calming and hydrating. Time seemed to slip away unnoticed, but what stayed with me most wasn’t just how my skin looked or how relaxed my muscles felt; instead, the sense that I’d been cared for in a way that extended beyond the physical.
