Jayne Green talks exclusively to the General Manager of Saks Fifth Avenue Bahrain, Sharmila Murat, discussing their latest SS18 fashion show, trends, and why it is the ultimate shopping destination for all things fashion…
With fashion month, over, what have you most enjoyed about the SS18 season shows?
The silhouettes from the latest fashion shows (referring to FW18, as SS18 shows were last June) are feminine, fresh, and fun. The shows promoted diversity through political messages on t-shirts ( Valentino, Dior), models wearing hijab (Maxmara), millennials (Dolce and Gabbana), and more mature people modeling (Balenciaga). Fashion became more than just clothing – it’s a statement. Of the thousands of looks that have come down the runways in New York, Milan, and Paris, here are a few favorites that are in store for SS18:
Which have been the best-received pieces from the SS18 collections? Why?
SS18 has been undoubtedly the season of the return of logos in fashion. We haven’t seen logomania on such a scale since the early to mid-90’s and almost brandless labels like Celine and Maison Margiela took over. From Balenciaga printed on scarves to Saint Laurent’s YSL shaped heels and Chloe’s name on sweatshirts, brands are literally spelling their names out. These pieces have been extremely well received in Saks Fifth Avenue Bahrain and with the hottest fashion bloggers due to the importance of logos in the region.
If you had to incorporate one trend from SS18 trend into your wardrobe, what would it be? Why?
Without a doubt, the 80’s. SS18 Trends: Logomania, pastel colors, 80s, Denim, trench coats, belt bags, vintage owers, nautical…
Which Fashion Week designer have you admired and why?
Saint Laurent was the show of the season. Taking place in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the looks were as amazing as the venue. The magic of Anthony Vaccarello continues to impact Saint Laurent collections season after season. He has also brought freshness in accessories, which is good news for Saks shoppers. His signature on dresses is now iconic.
How much does sustainability govern the designs in Saks Fifth Avenue? What would you say is the best way to achieve it in fashion?
Sustainable fashion is no longer just a trend. It is becoming a must for our industry and our planet, and we expect to see more sustainable designs and brands in the coming seasons. Stella McCartney is one of the strongest examples of sustainability in trends of the season and include a variety of exclusive and world- renowned luxury brands as well as some local designers. The styling is a long and carefully curated process ensuring a fashion forward and relevant show combining an international feel with local adaptation. Each year, we aim to create a bit of glamour and thank our Saks Bahrain community.
For someone who has never visited Saks Fifth Avenue, how would you describe the brand as a whole?
Since it opened its doors in New York nearly one hundred years ago, Saks Fifth Avenue has been revolutionary in launching and marrying iconic designers with exceptional services. Saks is more than just a department store, it’s a luxury environment with merchandise that is not just displayed but ‘dramatized,’ with exclusive products, incredible events, and where Experience is Everything. Saks Bahrain has been delivering that experience in the region since 2008 adding to it a local touch. Saks Bahrain is the go-to department store for anyone looking to be fashionable and up- to-date on the latest trends. The store is warm and inviting with a wide offer, distinctive services, and a unique experience.
