Sushi & Sax

The headline alone should spark intrigue. We indulged in unlimited sushi and superb jazz at Downtown Rotana’s Teatro on their Tuesday night special and came away knowing that we’d return again…

Sushi. A simple pleasure that never fails to impress us – give it to us in maki or sashimi form, and we’ll happily oblige. This mainstay in Japanese cuisine is a mainstay in all cuisines these days and it tends to be the answer to the question: “Which food could you live off for the rest of your life.” That says a great deal – and Bahrain too, has lived up to the world’s expectations. Sushi is everywhere: for a bite, for a full-fledged dinner or even a take-away, it’s a food that serves us all.

Downtown Rotana’s Teatro offers a Sushi and Sax night every Tuesday, where you get more than just your fix of sushi – you get a crooning saxophone playing while you tuck into your unlimited platter of sushi.

We started off with a Downtown Tokyo, made up of ginger, coriander, lemongrass (a firm favourite) and ginger ale, served sake style in a twee box with a bed of ice. The aftertaste was particularly strong, leaving a prickling burn in the throat but the lemongrass harmonised very well with the more powerful ingredients and softened the hit of ginger – the coriander is a particularly unique touch – we love herby notes.

Our gargantuan basket arrived with a mix of colourful sushi including: Kon Bi Ne Shon maki, California maki, Passion Torch roll, Rainbow roll, Lobster maki and Kani maki among many more. From vegetarian (avocado/cucumber filled) options to crispy tuna and salmon maki that hit the spot oh so well. For us though, the Lobster maki was the winner of the night – the soft meat with its coat of light batter and creamy avocado proved to be a brilliant combo, something we’d never tried before and was a lovely novelty.

And as we were making our way through the unending platter of sushi, the saxophonist was playing some beautiful songs (she even switched to a flute at one stage) and provided wonderful entertainment. Teatro’s décor is also akin to a sax atmosphere – it’s chic, opulent but also down to earth and modern too. You can great glimpses of Manama through the floor to ceiling windows, too.

Overall, our experience was nothing short of fantastic. The sushi and the sax combination was perfect and made for a thrilling Tuesday night.
