The competition in our fair capital for good Italian fare is tight with the likes of BICE and Roberto’s and many more, so it’s fair to say our expectations were high when visiting Circo at Abu Dhabi’s InterContinental Hotel…
In keeping with the other cities where Circo exists, such as New York and Las Vegas, the décor at InterContinental is fun, bright and intimate. We walk through the circus-themed restaurant, with its red, yellow and blue low-hanging lamps and bright interiors, and head to the outside terrace area. The terrace at the InterContinental is an absolute must during the winter months whether you are eating at Circo or any of their other excellent venues.
The menu at Circo offers traditional Italian cuisine and every month they also
offer a special menu from a particular part of Italy with dishes true to the particular region. These menus are great and they offer something different to the diner. The starters menu boasts everything from soup, salad and antipasto. We opt for the antipasto dish which is perfect for two people to share. Circo has a pork license so this is a true Antipasto platter made up of many delicious meats such as prosciutto, speck, mortadella and salami with goats cheese, parmesan, a hard cheese made from sheeps milk and grilled vegetables such as peppers, zucchini and eggplant. This dish is super fresh and is served as a generous portion which we hope is a good sign of things to come for our mains.
For our main dishes there are so many options to choose from with everything from risotto, delicious pastas, seafood options and hearty protein choices such as veal and tenderloin steak. We can’t go past a classic pasta, so we choose the Tagliatelle with Slow Cooked Wagyu Bolognese Sauce. This homely dish is perfectly cooked with just the right amount of sauce and excellent flavour. Another fantastic dish that we try is the pan-seared Mediterranean sea bass with mussels, clams, saffron cream, sautéed baby spinach, sun-dried tomatoes and purple potato.
Both dishes are rich in flavour and presented beautifully on the plate. We simply can’t go past dessert with dishes such as the Tiramisu Sphere with Dark Chocolate Shell, Mascarpone Cheese, Coffee and Ladyfingers calling out our name. We find much joy in cracking the chocolate sphere to reveal layers of tasty tiramisu filling with a decedent coffee flavour that delightfully packed a punch.
We also try the classic Illy Espresso Poured Over Vanilla Gelato, Whipped Cream, and Chocolate Espresso Bean which is super tasty and the perfect end to a satisfying meal.
