PURE AND SIMPLE

Founded in Melbourne, Australia in 1987, AESOP today offers its superlative skin, hair and body care products in signature stores around the world, Angela Beitz explores…

1. How does Aesop set itself apart from other skincare brands?

We are known for our commitment to using both plant- based and laboratory- made ingredients of the highest quality and proven efficacy – particularly those with the greatest anti-oxidant properties. Our sincere interest in aesthetics means we are also committed to intelligent and sustainable design – which extends to every aspect of Aesop’s workings.

2. How did it all begin?

The brand started in Melbourne in 1987 and then in 2003, in an underground nook in the Melbourne bayside suburb of St Kilda, Aesop hosted our first in-store customers. The space – once a narrow ramp descending into an underground car park – set the benchmark for future structural ambitions. So when it was proposed to craft the ceiling of Aesop Adelaide from 7560 amber glass bottles, few eyebrows were raised. Nor did we shy away from the architectural challenge of constructing a store with 400,000 sheets of reclaimed copies of the New York Times in New York’s Nolita, or using 3000 cardboard boxes – the kind used to ship our products – in the assemblage of Aesop Flinders Lane.

3. How important is sustainable design to the brand?

Our sincere interest in intelligent and sustainable design extends to every aspect of Aesop’s workings. Just as meticulous research is integral to the formulation of each product, our utilitarian containers are carefully considered to ensure they function with ease and bring delight to our eyes. We believe unequivocally that well- considered design improves our lives.

4. How does the brand work to achieve perfect skin for customers?

Our products care for all skin types. An array of factors can assist in identifying your skin type. There are three main types – dry, oily and combination. Understanding the whims of your skin allows for a tailored regimen that works with, and not against, what genetics have bequeathed. To achieve and maintain the skin’s optimum health, best give the organ what it wants.

5. Which products would you recommend from your range for dry skin?

Our comprehensive regimen for dry skin involves hydration at each step to leave the skin clean, smooth, nourished and supple. Dispense half a teaspoon of Purifying Facial Cream Cleanser into clean hands. Massage over face and neck, then rinse thoroughly with warm water and pat dry. Splash half a teaspoon of Parsley Seed Anti-Oxidant Facial Toner onto a cotton pad or directly into your hands, pat onto your face and neck and wait until moisture absorbs. Follow by massaging half a teaspoon of Camellia Nut Facial Hydrating Cream into the skin.

6. And for combination skin?

An oily T-zone calls for astringent formulations; however, Fabulous Face Cleanser, a mild and soothing formulation, is best to ensure minimal disturbance is caused to the skin’s equilibrium.B& Tea Balancing Toner balances and calms the skin and Mandarin Facial Hydrating Cream delivers moisture replenishment without a weighty after feel. Pour half a teaspoon of Fabulous Face Cleanser into clean hands. Massage over the face and neck, then rinse thoroughly with warm water and pat dry. Splash half a teaspoon of B & Tea Balancing Toner onto a cotton pad or directly into your hands, pat onto your face and neck and wait until moisture absorbs. Follow by massaging half a teaspoon of Mandarin Facial Hydrating Cream into the skin.

7. And finally oily skin?

Our regimen of formulations astringent enough to address excess sebum without stripping the skin’s oils completely. This cleanse-and-tone pair effect thoroughly cleansed and refreshed skin, complemented by a lightweight, rapidly absorbed Serum that delivers moisture, protective anti- oxidants and skin-soothing botanicals with a matte finish. Pour half a teaspoon of Amazing Face Cleanser into clean hands, and lather. Massage over the face and neck, then rinse thoroughly with warm water and pat dry. Splash half a teaspoon of Bitter Orange Astringent Toner onto a cotton pad or directly into your hands, and pat onto your face and neck. Allow Toner to absorb, then follow by massaging half a teaspoon of Oil Free Facial Hydrating Serum into the skin.
